When Thursday rolled around and we got to go in for our first ultrasound appointment, the time could not get here fast enough. I have heard from many friends, “Just wait until you hear the heartbeat!” “Seeing your baby for the first time is amazing!” “It’s a moment you’ll never forget!”
We arrived to the appointment and headed in with the nurse. I was 7 weeks 5 days gestational age and by now we should be able to see our little embryo and hear a heartbeat. When she came in to the room, she asked us the general health questions… “How are you feeling? Any concerns at this point? I got to tell her that I was having a good amount of morning nausea but no vomiting and was really tired. She assured me that was all completely normal.
She then started the ultrasound with the screen turned away from us as to make sure she could find the cluster of cells first. Next came the question, “Did you guys do any fertility treatment?” Since we were being seen at Mid-Iowa Fertility I can understand why she was asking the question, so I went on to tell her how we did the HSG test and ended up pregnant before needing to get any fertility treatment but came in anyway because we wanted the blood test done to confirm WE ARE PREGNANT!! What seemed like an eternity…… was really like a minute she continued to look at the monitor and that’s when I began to have racing thoughts. “Can she not find my baby?” “What in the world is taking so long?” “Show me the screen!” “Let me hear the heartbeat.. NOW!”
She finally said, “Ok, are you ready for this?!?!” Ready, I thought…. YES! No doubt about it, I want to see my baby! She turned the screen and calmly said…. “You have two in there...”
